At Seafield, we are proudly committed to providing compassionate, person-centered care that respects the dignity, individuality, and recovery goals of every patient. Through ongoing efforts to promote inclusion and cultural responsiveness, we strive to create a safe and nurturing environment where all individuals can access the support, they need to build lives free from active substance abuse.
Substance Use Disorder (SUD) does not discriminate and it affects individuals from all backgrounds. Members of the LGBTQ+ community often face unique challenges that can increase their vulnerability to substance use and create barriers to accessing effective treatment. As treatment providers continue to advance person-centered care, it is essential that outpatient treatment programs recognize the importance of offering safe, inclusive, affirming, and culturally responsive services for LGBTQ+ individuals.
Seafield staff promotes a safe, inclusive and affirming space for all members of the LGBTQ+ community. Without a safe and affirming space to seek treatment and have these experiences validated, individuals may not have the opportunity to address the important aspects of recovery.
Research consistently demonstrates that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning individuals experience higher rates of substance use disorders compared to the general population. For many individuals, substance use may initially be used as a mechanism to cope with the stigma, rejection, harassment and discrimination frequently experienced as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. Many LGBTQ+ individuals have experienced familial rejection, social isolation, bullying and trauma which can all lead to anxiety, depression and substance abuse.
Recovery flourishes in environments where individuals feel safe, empowered and accepted. Seafield believes that family involvement in treatment plays a vital role in individuals reaching their long-term recovery goals. Family involvement in the treatment process can help reduce conflict, improve understanding, educate and improve family relationships. For those individuals who may not have supportive family systems, Seafield encourages involvement of chosen family, friends and supportive peers.
As Seafield celebrates Pride Month 2026 (aptly themed “Unstoppable Pride”) we honor the recovery journey of all who courageously embark on the road to recovery. By embracing inclusivity and recognizing the diverse experiences of those we serve, we can ensure that all individuals have the opportunity to achieve wellness, sobriety, and meaningful recovery. We are reminded that all things are possible in recovery! Pride in Recovery starts at Seafield!
